Sintra Underground Tower

The Underground Tower in Sintra is the central structure in the system of mysterious underground tunnels of the Quinta da Regaleira palace and park complex, built early last century in Portugal. It seems to serve as a mystical passage from light to darkness. The entrance to the underground tower is guarded by guards of penumbra, representing the world of penumbra.

According to legend, in a mysterious well 27 meters deep, resembling an inverted tower, Freemasons held initiation rites. The ceremony of initiation into the Masonic lodge traditionally ended at the bottom of the pit, where the eight-pointed star is depicted. The spiral staircase around the well with an outlandish moss-covered railing symbolizes the circles of heaven or hell, depending on the direction of travel. The Sintra Tower has a stone door that leads to an underground tunnel.
