Background

The elegant but dilapidated buildings of Sarkhej Roja are located around a huge (now often dried up) reservoir created by Sultan Mahmud Begad in the mid-15th century. It is a very colorful place where several rulers of Ahmedabad used to rest. The mausoleums of Mahmud Begad (at the entrance, with geometric jalis) and Ganj Baksha (the largest in Gujarat) are located here.

A round trip auto-rickshaw from the city center costs around Rs 120. A visit to the complex can be combined with the Vishalla Restaurant and Ware Museum, which is 1 km on the road into the city.
