Salinas Grandes

Salinas Grandes is one of the world’s largest salt marshes located in Argentina. It is spread between the Sierra Pampa mountain ranges, on what was once a vast saltwater lake.

.

General Information

Salinas Grandes’ own area reaches 8,900 km², which, together with the nearby salt marshes of La Antigua, Ambargasta and San Bernardo, forms a 30,000 km² salt field massif, the largest on the planet. For centuries, the people of the surrounding area have been mining salt in Salinas Grandes – not surprising, given that it treads the surface of the earth here.

.

There are also deposits of soda and potash within the salt marsh. The Tucumán-Córdoba railroad runs through Salinas Grandes, as well as a highway.

.

Despite the seeming similarity to snow, temperatures here can reach up to 45 degrees Celsius.
