Of the many restaurants located on Pier 39, the most notable is the Forbes Island floating restaurant, but you can also enjoy sweets, ice cream and fruit from the many street vendors. The most interesting feature of the pier, however, is the harbor seal rookery located near the end of the pier.

California sea lions have always inhabited San Francisco Bay, but at Pier 39 they first appeared in September 1989. Although the reasons for the migration remained unclear, the pier was renovated and every effort was made to allow the animals to roam freely and feel safe. By the end of 1989, more than a dozen sea lions had settled on the pier. When in 1990 the number of individuals exceeded 150, yacht owners began to complain about odor and noise, and there was a real danger of collision with the half-ton animals. But the factor of tourists attracted by the lions outweighed, and the marina was moved to another location. The number of marine animals living on the pier is constantly changing. Sea lions periodically leave the pier in search of food, but invariably return, usually in the spring. Scientists estimate that about 1,500 animals have settled on the rookeries at Pier 39. Sea lions are a decoration of this wonderful pier and are madly liked by tourists.
