Permafrost Museum in Igarka
The Museum of Permafrost is a local history complex located above the Arctic Circle, in Igarka. It is the only museum in the world that has a unique underground in the thickness of permafrost ground. March 19, 1965 is considered to be the date of foundation of the Permafrost Museum – on that day an exposition was opened at the laboratory, which is available for all comers. However, the official status of a local history museum was received only on July 1, 1991. In 1995, it was “upgraded” to a local history complex, and the underground part of the museum was recognized as a natural monument of regional importance.
