Пантикапей
Panticapaeum is an ancient Greek city located in the center of Kerch, on Mount Mithridates, near the city embankment. Panticapaeum was founded at the end of VII century BC by natives of Miletus and in its heyday occupied an area of 100 hectares. The name of the city was given by the Scythians who lived here, in ancient Iranian language it means “fish way”. Panticapaeum occupied a favorable geographical position at the crossroads of trade routes between China, Europe and the Mediterranean, on which, in addition to fish, transported a variety of goods. The patron saint of the city was Apollo, and the main temple of the acropolis was built in his honor. The necropolis is also valuable, represented by a whole range of burial mounds of Yuz-Oba, where the remains of the Scythian nobility and military leaders are buried. The Melek-Chesmensky, Golden and Tsarsky barrows, which have been preserved intact, are open for inspection.
