Charlestown

The island’s largest city, its economic and cultural center is spread out on the west coast of Nevis, and is home to about 1,500 people. Because of the numerous earthquakes, which brought the city a lot of trouble, the inhabitants of Charlestown have learned to build dwellings on a special technology. Almost all the old buildings here are built on a massive stone base, and their upper floors are made of wood.

Charlestown’s attractions include two museums, a botanical garden, the Jewish Cemetery, a 1684 building that housed the first synagogue in the Caribbean, and the Courthouse, which appeared in the city in 1825.
