History of Myskhako village

The surroundings of Myskhako are rich in archaeological locations. Systematic excavations have been carried out here since the second half of the last century. Finds allow to fill all new pages of history of this corner of the Black Sea. The most vividly appears before the researchers of the ancient era, but surveys have also revealed in this area remains of burial grounds and settlements of the Bronze Age and Early Iron Age.

.

The most important archaeological site is considered to be the settlement “Myskhako-I”, where cultural layers belonging to different historical epochs were found. The location, occupying an area of 200 m², is located on a rocky hill, reaching in some places the sea shore. Once, in a layer dating back to the 2nd century, archaeologists discovered a perfectly preserved bronze statuette of a young man wearing a “lion’s helmet” – a traditional attribute of Hercules and Alexander the Great. According to experts, the famous find is a combined image of the legendary heroes. The excavation area is available for inspection.

.
‘ Aulas and fortifications of Natuhai people – Circassian sub-ethnos – appeared in Anapa. Contemporaries noted their noble features and compared them to Hellenic statues. There is a theory that Natuhaians are descendants of Greek and Italian colonists who lived in these territories. Adyghe auls existed here during the Caucasian War. After the end of the war, the dwellings were abandoned due to mass migration of the indigenous population to Turkey.

.

The new history of Myskhako began in 1869. The same year officially dates the foundation of the winery of the same name. At that time Crimean Mikhail Fedorovich Penchul, a doctor by profession and a winegrower by vocation, purchased 40 dessiatinas of land on the left bank of the Myskhako River and planted them with grape seedlings delivered from Yalta. He received the first decent batch of wine “in 100 buckets” three years later. Then several other grape enthusiasts started planting vines on the right bank of Myskhako. Soon a plan of the Myskhako tract was drawn up with the breakdown of land for dacha construction.

.

By 1899 Penchul’s farm had 76,000 vines. The enterprising winemaker built a stone house in Myskhako, but he decided to give his heritage to the treasury. In 1903 a school of viticulture was opened at the winery, at the same time the village was officially founded.

.

In 1943, a naval landing force landed on Cape Myskhako and seized a bridgehead, which later became known as “Little Land”. 274 sailors held this piece of land for 225 days, until the liberation of Novorossiysk. During the hostilities many buildings of the village were damaged, some of the vineyards were destroyed or mined. Mines and shells are still found here to this day.

.

During the defense of “Little Land” here often visited the future Secretary General Leonid Brezhnev. In the hospital-bomb shelter, housed in the first winery of Mikhail Penchul, he handed party tickets to the heroes. After the war the winery “Myskhako” was renamed “Malaya Zemlya”. High-ranking officials and their entourage often visited the winery to enjoy a magnificent specialty Cabernet. Leonid Ilyich himself often came to the winery. In 1974 a cozy tasting room was built for his next visit.

.

In 1993 the winery was returned to its historical name, and in 2005 it became the official supplier of wines to the Kremlin. Today, a visit to the vineyards and a tour of the winery is an indispensable part of the excursion program of tourists vacationing in Myskhako, Novorossiysk and neighboring resorts.

In general, the microclimate of the resort village is almost identical to the weather conditions characteristic of Novorossiysk. The difference is only in the strength of the wind and the fact that the air temperature in Myskhako is almost always a couple of degrees higher. In winter it is +3…+5 °С on average.
