Marcial Waters
Marcial Waters is a balneological and mud resort in the Kondopoga District of the Republic of Karelia, 50 km northwest of Petrozavodsk. It is home to mineral springs rich in iron. The spa was founded by Peter I in 1719. The Tsar came to the healing springs 4 times to improve his health. The results impressed the monarch so much that he ordered to build palaces here. The Marcial Waters became the first Russian resort. The word “marcial” comes from the name of the god Mars. You should drink water from the springs carefully and better through a tube, as it is cold and very rich in iron, which can spoil tooth enamel. You can have a royal rest in the sanatorium “Palaces”, which was built in 2003 on the site of the palace of Peter the Great.
