Mountains of Malá Fatra

The Malá Fatra Mountains is a picturesque mountain range in northwestern Slovakia that attracts tourists with beautiful cliffs, gorges, mountain lakes and waterfalls. Travelers go to this part of Slovakia to climb peaks, ski, explore folk architecture, and see old castles and ruins of medieval buildings.

General Information

The Little Fatra mountain chain stretches from southwest to northeast. Its core is composed of granites, but most of the peaks are composed of limestones and dolomites. Geographically, the mountains are divided into two parts: the Krivanska Lesser Fatra with the highest point of Wielki Krivan (1708 m) and the Lucanska Lesser Fatra, whose highest point is Mt Wielka Luka (1476 m).

In 1988, the Mala Fatra National Park was established here, with an area of 226 km². Its staff protects rare species of flora and fauna, rich mountain-forest biogeocenoses, natural and historical sights. Most of all tourists and skiers visit the picturesque Vratná valley, Shutovský vodopad and medieval castles – Budatinský, Oravský Hrad and Strečnanský Hrad.

How to get there

The Malá Fatra Mountains are located in the Žilina region, in northwestern Slovakia. The office of the Malá Fatra Nature Reserve is located in the resort village of Varin, in the southeastern suburbs of the town of Žilina.

The villages of Terchova, Vratna and Stefanova are considered to be the most popular points from which tourist routes on the Mala Fata Mountains usually start. All of them are connected by bus to Žilina.
