Maharaja’s Palace (Mysore Palace)
Maharaja’s Palace, a fantastic palace, one of the grandest monarchial residences of India, was the home of the Maharaja of Wadiyar. The previous palace burned down in 1897; the one you see now was completed in 1912 by English architect Henry Irwin and cost 4.5 million rupees.

The interior of this Indo-Moorish wonder – a kaleidoscope of stained glass, mirrors and festive colors – is beyond belief, matchless. It is adorned with carved wooden doors, mosaic floors and a series of paintings depicting life in Mysore during the British rule. On your way to the Maharaja’s palace, you pass by a beautiful collection of sculptures and artifacts. Don’t forget to check out the armory with an interesting collection of weapons that are over 700 years old.
.Every weekend, on national holidays and during Dussera, the Maharaja’s palace is illuminated with about a hundred thousand lamps that highlight his majestic profile in the night.
.Photographing outside is free, but photography inside the building is strictly prohibited. Cameras should be left in lockers (Rs. 5) at the entrance to the palace.
A multi-lingual audio tour of the palace is also available, the price of which is included in the ticket for foreigners.
