Madrasah Muhammadiyah

Madrasah Muhammadiyah is a Muslim educational institution located in the Old Tatar Sloboda, in the historical center of Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan. The madrasah was founded in the late 19th century. Before the revolution of 1917 it was widely known among Muslims of the Russian Empire, and people came here to study from different parts of the country. This educational institution trained clergymen and workers of religious organizations and made a great contribution to the history of education in Tatarstan.

Highlights

Nowadays, the Muhammadiyah Madrasah trains imams-hatibs, teachers of the basics of Islam and the Arabic language, as well as translators from Arabic. The building that the madrasah occupies was erected at the beginning of the last century. Today it has the status of a cultural heritage site of the Republic of Tatarstan.

According to Islamic traditions, education in the madrasah is free and is conducted separately. The full-time department is accepted after the 9th or 11th grade. Basic training or sanawiyya at the full-time department lasts 3 years, and advanced or haliyya – 5 years. At the evening department students study for 4 years. Graduates receive a document of specialized secondary education and can continue their studies at the university if they wish.

The Muhammadiyah Madrasah is open from 8.00 to 18.00, with breaks for namaz.
