Linderhof Palace

Linderhof Palace is a picturesque 19th-century royal manor house located in southern Bavaria, in the German mountain reserve of Ammergebirge. Small in size, the fairy-tale palace attracts quite a few tourists from Germany itself and other countries. Travelers go to the residence of Bavarian King Ludwig II to admire the exquisite architecture and luxurious interior decoration, walk in the beautiful park and visit the nearby famous castles – Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein.

General Information

When the construction of the Linderhof Palace began, King Ludwig II of Bavaria was 24 years old. He had already ruled for five years and wanted a secluded country estate for recreation and hunting. The palace complex was built from 1869 to 1886. Some rooms were reconstructed already after the monarch’s death.

In the interiors of the palace, Baroque traditions are harmoniously combined with Rococo playfulness. Ten halls are available to visitors, where you can see antique furniture, an abundance of mirrors, tapestries, gilded moldings, sculptures and wall paintings, made by the best European masters.

Tourists

The Park Ensemble, the Grotto of Venus, the Moroccan House and the Moorish Kiosk are only open to visitors during the warm season. Linderhof Palace welcomes visitors from April 1 to October 15 – from 9.00 to 18.00, and from October 16 to March 31 – from 10.00 to 16.00. The price of an adult ticket is 8.5 € and a discounted ticket is 7.5 €. Excursions are conducted in German and English. If desired, tourists can take a printed text of the tour in Russian.

The Grotto of Venus

One of the most interesting places of the Linderhof Palace is an artificial cave more than 10 meters high, which is commonly referred to as the Grotto of Venus. It was created in the 1870s according to the project of the famous landscape architect August Dirigl. Scenes from famous German operas were staged in this place.

The small lake with a waterfall had lighting and an island. Ludwig II liked, sitting in a picturesque shell boat, to listen to opera singers who came to his estate from Munich.

How to get there

Linderhof Palace is 8 km from the alpine village of Oberammergau and 30 km from the popular ski resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. From Munich, take the train to Oberammergau and then change to bus no. 9622. From Garmisch-Partenkirchen take bus number 9606 to Ettal and then transfer to bus number 9622.
