Lincoln Memorial

The Lincoln Memorial, one of the most famous monuments in Washington, D.C., dedicated to Abraham Lincoln, is located at the west end of National Mall (Mall). The memorial is a neoclassical building with Doric columns through which the historical figure gazes serenely at the water surface of the pool.

General Information

History buffs can enjoy two speeches by the master of few words carved on the walls – the Second Inaugural Address and the Gettysburg Address, and other great sayings in the hallway below. From the steps of the memorial, Martin Luther King delivered the famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Architecture and art lovers will appreciate Henry Bacon’s austere design, complete with 36 Doric columns symbolizing the number of states in Lincoln’s time.

Many agree that the memorial is worth a visit at any time of day, but the views are most breathtaking after dark.
