Lake Neusiedler See
Neusiedler See is a steppe lake located on the border between Austria and Hungary. Its area is 315 km², of which 240 km² is on Austrian territory. The depth of the lake does not exceed 1.8 meters. The lake is surrounded by marshes – an ideal nesting and breeding ground for about 300 bird species. There are many hiking and biking trails through the reeds and marshes. In summer, vacationers are attracted by the excellent beaches. In winter, ice yachting and skateboarding are practiced on the lake. The Neusiedler See National Park is the largest bird reserve in Central Europe. Its area is 14,000 hectares, of which 6,000 hectares are located in Hungary. This region is very popular with tourists. You can rent rowing and sailing boats and explore the lake from the water. The quality of the water in the lake varies widely, depending on the amount of salts and silt formed by the bottom sediments. In summer there is a threat of fires in the reed beds. Fires spread very quickly due to strong winds.
.Lake Neusiedler See, the largest lake in Central Europe, is gradually disappearing. Two studies conducted by a team of experts from the University of Vienna have confirmed the fact that under the influence of global warming, Lake Neusiedler See will dry up between 2010 and 2050. There is a plan to save the lake by transferring water from the Danube, but this project poses a potential threat to the fragile ecosystem.
