History
An archipelago of 74 islands just off the coast of Queensland, it is ideal for exploring the true natural wonder that is the Great Barrier Reef. Day cruises and unforgettable scuba diving and snorkeling experiences are available here.
Some islands have changed dramatically in recent years due to the influx of tourists, such as Hamilton Island now towering apartment buildings and souvenir stores, and the resort on Hay Man Island is one of the most expensive. But most of the islands have remained virtually unchanged since the 1770s, when Captain Cook sailed here and named the archipelago after the day he arrived. Trinity Island itself, the largest in the group of islands, is a national park like many of the other islands. There are vast expanses of white sandy beaches and secluded bays, and the warm waters of the tropics teem with life, there are dense green pine forests with camping sites.
Some islands are completely uninhabited, while others are privately owned. Swimming around these islands is so popular that it often seems that there are more people in the sea than on land.
