Hohe Tauern National Park

The Hohe Tauern National Park

covers an area of approximately 1800 km². It is one of the last unspoiled mountain ranges in the center of Europe. The national park is located in the three federal states of Carinthia, Salzburg and Tyrol. The highest points are the Großglockner (3,798 m) and the Großfenediger (3,674 m). In geological terms, the High Tauern Mountains are a kind of window revealing to us the hidden secrets of the Earth’s history. Forces of displacement and erosion have imprinted layers of limestone (several kilometers thick). Under the influence of tectonic movements and rose mountains, which once were the bottom of the prehistoric sea. The cut of the rocks (gneiss and schist) is exactly the same as it was 300 million years ago. The national park is a sanctuary for alpine fauna and flora.
