General Information

The Romans grew wheat on Formentera, but during the Middle Ages, constant pirate raids made the area uninhabited: the inhabitants did not return until the late 17th century. In the main town of San Francesc de Formentera there is only a fortified church of the XVIII century, a small ethnographic museum and a bunch of souvenir shops. Both this town and the main tourist center Es Pujols lie on the shores of Estany Pudent, a large lagoon that attracts migratory birds. The small piece of land is surrounded by beaches. On the western side lies the smaller lagoon of Estany des Pes, considered a nature reserve. On the northern shore stands the interesting megalithic monument of Ca na Costa. Its stone blocks are believed to be over four thousand years old and are believed to be a funerary structure from the prehistoric era. At the eastern end of Formentera is La Mole, a lookout with a lighthouse and a monument to Jules Verne (1828-1905), the French science fiction writer who captured the magic of this beautiful place in his works.
