Skyscraper Chrysler Building
The Chrysler Building is one of New York City’s most famous structures, which rises on the east side of Manhattan. This powerful and majestic structure rightfully ranks second in the ranking of the city’s tallest buildings. Also, the Chrysler Building is among the top ten most favored structures of architecture in the United States. In 2007, the skyscraper was named the most beautiful building in New York City by the New York City Architectural Commission.
General Information
The skyscraper is designed in the Art Deco style. Its height reaches 319 meters. The history of the creation of this one-of-a-kind building, from design to commissioning, is full of a lot of interesting facts and events. The best architects strived to win the right to be called the builder of the world’s tallest structure and tried to make their changes directly in the process of construction. But, a certain William Van-Allen designed a steel spire of 38 meters at the top of the skyscraper, having coordinated it with the city authorities. These adjustments were kept in the strictest secrecy until the very end of construction, right up to the installation work on the roof of the spire. Thus, William VanAllen earned the title of architect of the tallest structure in the world. It is a known fact that the skyscraper was built at a crazy speed, namely 4 floors per week.
.The construction of the 77-story building was successfully completed on May 27, 1930. From that moment until the 1950s, the skyscraper housed the headquarters of the Chrysler Corporation, with the most recent floors housing the extensive apartments of the corporation’s owner, Walter Chrysler. The lobby of the skyscraper is executed in the style of expressionism, rich finishing is executed by red Moroccan marble and Belgian granite. The painting of the ceiling of the lobby, depicting industrial motifs, is recognized as one of the largest in the world. The walls of the 31st floor of the building are clad in white and gray brick, and decorated with huge replicas of Chrysler emblems. The next overhang appears on the 61st floor, on it rise eagle heads of incredible size and facing all four sides of the world. They are meant to protect Chrysler from its competitors. The upper floors are in a steel crown, which smoothly passes into the spire.
