Bukit Lawang

Bukit Lawang is a village in Indonesia in northern Sumatra, known for the orangutan rehabilitation center located here. The rainforests of Gunung Leuser National Park are a great area for hiking and rappelling.

.

General Information

The Bukit Lawang Center on the banks of the Bohorok River was founded in 1973 by two Swiss zoologists, Monika Borner and Regina Frey, with the aim of studying and protecting them and returning them to their natural habitat.

.

The zoologists were able to get support from the World Wildlife Fund, and the Bohorok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center is now run by the Indonesian government to rehabilitate released orangutans and save forests that are rapidly being destroyed. Visitors can view orangutans recently returned to the wild. To ease the apes’ transition to freedom, they are fed twice a day, and orangutans gather to the table from all over the forest. Scientists hope that in time, each orangutan will learn to find food on its own and won’t need to be fed.

.

Other attractions in the area include a bat cave that flies out at dusk, an acoustic cave, and the opportunity to go into the jungle and see orangutans on the loose.

.

By the way, “Orang utan” means “man of the forest” in Indonesian.
