Banaba Island

Banaba Island is located in the Pacific Ocean, south of the equator, west of the Gilbert Archipelago and east of Nauru. It is part of the Republic of Kiribati. Banaba Island has an area of only 6.39 km². The flora and fauna of Banaba have been irreparably damaged by uncontrolled phosphate mining, which has effectively destroyed the natural landscape and degraded the soils of almost the entire area. Tourism is not developed on the island.
