Alexandrovsky Garden in Moscow
Alexandrovsky Garden was created by architect Osip Bove on the order of Emperor Alexander I after the Patriotic War of 1812 to give Muscovites the joy of peaceful life again. The decoration of the garden’s cast-iron gates also contains symbols of triumph.
.General information
Today, the Alexander Garden keeps a symbol of another victory. At the Kremlin wall there is a memorial dedicated to the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. The Eternal Flame burns here, and servicemen of the Presidential Regiment perform guard duty at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the main post of the country. Sentries of Post No. 1 serve daily from 8.00 to 20.00, changing every hour. The most handsome boys are chosen for this responsible job. True, there are rumors that they are forcibly torn ligaments to make their legs rise so high – for comparison: ballerinas train such flexibility for years.
.
The Alexander Garden is also home to the Memorial to Hero-Cities, an obelisk with the names of revolutionaries, and a grotto whose wings are lined with the wreckage of buildings damaged by Napoleon’s invasion of Moscow.
.At the entrance to the underground shopping center “Okhotny Ryad” is a fountain, throwing a coin into which is considered a good omen. The boundary of Alexandrovsky Garden is now not a grid, but a decorative channel in memory of the Neglinka River hidden in a pipe with bronze statues of fairy-tale characters by sculptor Zurab Tsereteli.
.
Today the garden is commonly referred to in the singular, but the boundaries between the Upper, Middle and Lower Gardens are still clearly visible.
