The Al-Fateh Mosque

The Al-Fateh Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the world; the largest temple in Bahrain. Al-Fatiha Mosque is capable of accommodating more than 7,000 worshippers at a time.

Location

The mosque is located near King Faisal Highway in Jaffar, a neighborhood in the capital city of Manama. Al-Fatiha Mosque is in close proximity to the Royal Bahrain Palace, the residence of King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa of Bahrain.

History

The mosque was built at the end of Sheikh Isa ibn Salman al-Khalifa’s reign in 1987. It is named in honor of Sheikh Ahmed Al Fatih, the liberator of Bahrain.

Architecture

The huge dome that crowns the Al Fatiha Mosque is made of pure fiberglass and weighs over 60 tons. The dome is currently the largest glass dome in the world. The Al-Fatiha Mosque complex has also included the new National Library since 2006.

The mosque has two majestic minarets. The design of the interior of the mosque harmoniously echoes the style of the exterior. Under the central dome of the mosque there is an unusual crystal chandelier.
