Fortress of Yenikale
Yenikale Fortress is located in Crimea, on the shore of the Kerch Strait. The citadel was built by the Ottomans between 1699 and 1706. In translation from Turkish, its name means “New Fortress”, as it is formed from the words yeni – new and kale – fortress. Currently, Yenikale is part of the city limits of Kerch. The place for the construction of the fortress was not chosen by chance: it is the narrowest part of the Kerch Strait, from where it was possible to maximize control over the passage of ships between the Azov and Black Seas. Today, tourists who decided to visit the fortress Yenikale, can see the Azov Gate, preserved walls and bastion with towers.
