Yale University

Yale University is America’s oldest university and is located in the city of New Haven. This university is not only the alma mater of five U.S. presidents, but also a superb campus with many Gothic buildings. The most impressive of the pointed ones is the Harkness Tower. From there, bells chime at intervals. For campus tours or maps, stop by the Yale Visitor Center (Tel: 203-432-2300; www.yale.edu/visitor; 149 Elm St; 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Mon-Fri, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sat) on the north side of the Green. Free one-hour tours are offered weekdays at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. and weekends at 1:30 p.m.

Museums

There are several museums open at Yale University, the most impressive being the Museum of Art, which boasts masterpieces by W. Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, and J. Pollock. Jackson Pollock, as well as an excellent collection of paintings by European artists, including Vincent van Gogh’s The Night Cafe (Tel: 203-432-0600; artgallery.yale.edu; 1111 Chapel St; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sat-Sat, 1 p.m.-6 p.m. Sun).
