Wat Phra That Si Chom Tong

Wat Phra That Si Chom Thong dates back to the 15th century. The oldest part of the temple is a Burmese-style chedi built in 1451, which houses Buddhist relics. The cross-shaped wihan dates back to around 1550, to the reign of King Myang Kaew. The gilded wood carvings on the side gables, cornices and portals, as well as the decoration of the inner teak columns and slabs are of the highest artistic quality. Inside there is also a richly decorated Burmese-style altar with two lavishly carved elephant tusks and various Buddha statues. The bronze image of a seated Buddha is particularly revered.

A small road behind the monastery after 9 km leads to the Maklang waterfall with cascades 100 m high (visit paid; open daily from 8.00 to sunset). There is a path along the rocks, which takes about an hour and a half to reach the beautiful Bori-chinda cave.
