Вовнушки

Vovnushki is a complex of defense and watchtowers in the high-mountainous Jeyrakhsky district of Ingushetia. The medieval complex is a unique monument of Ingush architecture, part of the Jeyrakh-Assinsky State Historical, Architectural and Natural Museum-Reserve. Access to the towers is blocked by a wall and natural obstacles in the form of mountains. The first descriptions of Vovnushek date back to the early 18th century. At that time the ancestral castle of the Ozdoyevs played an important strategic role: caravans regularly traveled here, which were raided by robbers, and the towers served as a refuge for traders.

The Vovnushki Monument consists of three main towers, two of which stand on top of one cliff and one on the opposite cliff. Vovnushki attracts attention from afar, although it is located in a picturesque gorge of the Guloy-Khi River against the background of impressive cliffs and ridges of the Caucasus. The towers are made of stone and look like a natural continuation of the cliffs on the tops of which they are built. They are 4-storey buildings of truncated pyramidal shape with flat roofs and narrow windows. The barrier walls blocking access to the towers are organically integrated into the rocky relief.
