History

The history of the Voronezh Museum of Local Lore begins in 1894, when three rooms were allocated in the building of the City Duma to house the first exhibits.

During the Great Patriotic War, part of the collected collections perished, and some managed to evacuate to the territory of Kazakhstan. In 1943, museum workers were able to return to their hometown and continued their work. In 1959 the Voronezh Museum of Local Lore moved to the house on Plekhanovskaya Street, where it is located now. The beautiful mansion, where all the exhibits were moved, was erected at the beginning of the last century, and originally housed the provincial school for blind children.

.

Today, the Voronezh Museum of Local Lore attracts up to 100 thousand visitors a year. One of its permanent expositions is devoted to the history of the region, starting from the Stone Age. Here are kept the fragment of an ancient boat found in the Voronezh region, and the tusks of a mammoth. The history of Voronezh is inextricably linked with the name of Peter the Great, so the museum halls exhibit a cast of the Russian emperor’s face, a print of his hand, a large ship’s anchor and a model of a wooden ship of the Peter the Great times.
