Volkonka village

Volkonka is a village, part of the Lazarevsky District of the municipal formation “resort city” Sochi, Krasnodar Krai. The village, located near the Black Sea, is only 59 km from Central Sochi. Unlike Lazarevsky, this green hilly place can not boast a developed infrastructure and a large number of attractions, but because of the low prices for housing it is quite popular with budget tourists. Highlights

The exact age of the settlement is still uncertain, as Volkonka only received its official status as a settlement during the 1923 revision. But locals claim that once the local land belonged to the family of the princes Volkonsky, whose surname gave the name of the settlement.

Today Volkonka is home to about 500 people (mostly Armenians), whose main occupation is excursion and tourist activities. Geographically, the village is usually divided into three parts: Lower, Middle and Upper Volkonka. More “elite” option is the lower part of the village, because it is located in close proximity to the sea. Here is also the village railway station. Accordingly, the prices for housing in this area are inflated. Middle Volkonka occupies a plot next to the highway A-147. Getting to the beach from here is not so convenient, but if you are not ready to overpay for the excellent location of the hotel, you can consider this option. Nizhnyaya Volkonka is the most remote from the sea and at the same time the cheapest area.

Orienting in the village is very easy, as there are only two streets (Kurskaya and Olkhovaya) and two lanes (Andreevsky and Olkhovy). Social infrastructure in Volkonka is poorly developed, although the main signs of civilization are present. On the territory of the village there are stores, excursion points, canteens and cafes, as well as a sufficient number of mini-hotels, guest houses and bungalows.

Sights of Volkonka

On the territory of the settlement there is a unique monument of the megalithic era and a popular tourist object – Volkonsky dolmen. The irregularly shaped stone boulder with a chamber and an entrance hole carved inside it is hidden in the river valley, near the highway “Novosibirsk – Sochi”. Not far from the dolmen, a mineral spring comes out of the gorge. It is impossible to drink the water because of its high hydrogen sulfide content, but it is considered useful to take baths and make compresses with it. Find similar springs can be found on the territory of the former sanatorium of the Air Force (Kurskaya Street).

In the gorge you can see another attraction Volkonki – tract “Two Brothers”. The basis of this unusual natural formation are two giant monoliths, between which loops a brisk little river Godlich. If you get to the stone cliffs in the company of a guide, get ready to hear from him a romantic legend about rival brothers and their beautiful beloved.

Lovers of all kinds of antiquities are recommended to visit the ruins of the ancient fortress of Bagu, occupying the left bank of the Godlich River. It is believed that the walls of the ancient fortification were erected here by the Byzantines. At the site of ancient ruins archaeologists have found household items, the age of which dates back to the IV century.

Beaches

The sea near Volkonka is clean and transparent, and the descent into it is gentle. The coastal area is dotted with large pebbles, so it is worth taking care of the purchase of appropriate footwear in advance. On the territory of the village there are two beaches – the central beach and the beach of the sanatorium of the Air Force. Since even in the vacation season the number of tourists here is significantly less than in the neighboring Lazarevsky, there are no questions with finding a free place on the beach. As a rule, the main part of tourists who prefer to rest in Volkonka are families with small children, elderly couples or lovers of quiet picturesque places who want to save a little money.

Entertainment in Volconca

Volkonka is not rich in its own entertainment, so to at least somehow occupy yourself, you will have to go to the local beaches. For quite democratic (in comparison with Sochi rates), here you can ride a banana, get acquainted with the inhabitants of the underwater world in the company of an experienced diver or get a portion of adrenaline by trying your hand at parasailing (flying on a parachute attached to a water boat). For a more intense cultural and entertainment program it is better to go to the neighboring Lazarevskoye.

Where to stay

Volkonka is not the place where you should come for high hotel service, although a minimum level of comfort can be claimed here.

Those who prefer relative freedom and want less contact with the owners and staff of guest houses, can rent separate accommodation, for example, in “Bungalows Volkonka City”. Cozy cottages are equipped with everything you need, in addition, at the disposal of guests are provided with a common kitchen and airport shuttle service. If you came to the village solely for swimming and sunbathing, rent one of the many boathouses. All of them occupy the most favorable from a tourist point of view territory – the beach line.

Inexpensive and comfortable accommodation is available in local guest houses and mini-hotels like “Volkonki”, “Liana”, “Fisherman’s Shelter” and “On the Beach”. Many hotels have their own parking lots, and Liana and On the Beach also offer shuttle services.

How to get there

Getting to Volkonka from Adler Airport is most convenient by rail. But since long-distance trains do not stop in the village, it is better to change in Lazarevsky to the electric train and already on it to get to the place. Another option – Lazarevsky shuttle buses and cabs, which will take you to your destination in 10-15 minutes. Those who plan to travel to Volkonka by their own car should turn off the federal highway M-4 “Don” to highway A-147 and drive along it in the direction of Sochi. If you plan to book a room in one of the mini-hotels in the village in advance, pay attention to the fact that many of them provide guests with airport shuttle service.
