History of the Winzavod Art Center

The complex of buildings in the 4th Syromyatnikovsky Lane, owned by Vinzavod, is located on the estate of Princess Volkonskaya, a famous high society schemer. The mansion has survived and is located at the entrance to the Contemporary Art Center. After the princess, the estate passed into the hands of Moscow merchants, among whom Vasily Kokorev, a collector of paintings, stood out – part of his collection was later bought by Tretyakov.

.

In the mid-19th century, the part of the estate separated by a railroad track was bought by the brewing joint-stock company “Moscow Bavaria”. Its owners, merchants Khludovy, arranged Syromyatniki, creating here several charitable organizations. The winery itself was opened in 1889 by the merchant Dmitry Travnikov and his sons. After the revolution, the semi-artisanal production turned into the Moscow Combine of grape and dessert wines, which produced about 170 types of products. In post-Soviet times it closed down, having failed to cope with competitors. The empty buildings were handed over to the Vinzavod Art Center founded in 2007 by the Trotsenko family.
