Vasilyevsky Island

Vasilyevsky Island is one of the most amazing places in St. Petersburg – both geographically and historically and culturally. Located in the delta of the Neva River, it is the largest of all its islands. It stretches 4.2 kilometers from north to south and 6.6 kilometers from west to east. The total area of Vasilievsky Island, up to 3.5 meters above sea level, is 10.9 km².

Strelka Vasilevsky Island

The central place in the whole architectural ensemble is occupied by the Exchange building. It was built in 1805-1810 by the same Tom de Thomon. Located on the then empty square, it conditionally divided it into two parts, which became separate squares – Exchange and Collegiate. The building fully met the needs of the rapidly developing economy of Russia at that time. The building is remarkable in itself: it is made in the style of an ancient temple. Rostral columns, which we have already mentioned above, are located just in front of the Exchange.
