Valdai National Park

Valdai National Park is located in the northern part of the Valdai Upland and occupies an area of 159.1 thousand hectares within three districts of the Novgorod region: Valdai, Demiansky and Okulovsky. Its length from north to south is 105 kilometers, from west to east – 45 kilometers. The territory of the Valdai Park approximately corresponds to the boundaries of the catchment basins of lakes Borovno, Valdayskoye, Velje, Seliger and the upper reaches of the Polomety River, excluding the lands of urban and rural settlements, recreation centers, joint-stock companies and owners. The Valdai National Park was established on May 17, 1990 to preserve the unique lake-forest complex of the Valdai Upland and to create conditions for the development of organized recreation in this area. In 1994 it was admitted to the Federation of Natural National Parks of Europe, and in 2004 it was granted the high status of an international biosphere reserve within the framework of the UNESCO program “Man and the Biosphere”. The list of archaeological monuments of Valdai Park includes 82 sites: ancient sites (VII-VI centuries BC), ancient settlements, villages, hills, burial mounds.
