Upolu Island

Upolu is the capital island of the state of Samoa in the Pacific Ocean. It is of volcanic origin, located 13 km southeast of Savai’i Island, and is the most populated island in the archipelago. Upolu Island is 75 kilometers long and has an area of 1118.7 km². Tourists come here to experience the atmosphere of the real Polynesia. In the west of the island there is Faleolo International Airport, in the north – the capital Apia. According to Samoan mythology, Upolu was the first woman on the island. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the island was sometimes called Oyalawa or Oyolowa. In the late 19th century, R. L. Stevenson owned a 1.6 km² plantation on Upolu and died here in 1894.
