Tsarevets Fortress

Tsarevets Fortress is located in the town of Veliko Tarnovo in northern Bulgaria. This medieval fortress is one of the symbols of the country, its ruins for many centuries have kept the people hopeful and confident in gaining freedom. The first fortifications on the hills of Tsarevets and Trapezitsa were built by the Romans. The fortress that preceded the present one appeared in the 5th century thanks to the Byzantines. In the 7th century it was destroyed by the Slavs. Tsarevets fortress was built by the Bulgarians during the Second Bulgarian Empire, when the city became its capital.
