Tree of Life in Bahrain

The Tree of Life is a phenomenon famous not only in Bahrain but all over the world. A lone tree stands in the middle of the desert heat, on top of a 25-meter high sand hill, a symbol of fortitude and vitality.

.

The Tree of Life belongs to the mimosa family. Its scientific name is Prosopis Cineraria. In the harsh conditions of the desert, withstanding the hot sun, 50-degree heat, lack of water, the tree lives for almost 400 years and reaches a height of 9.75 meters.

The mystery of the Tree of Life

The long-lived tree has baffled scientists and biologists, although they have come up with several theories to explain the phenomenon. Some believe that the mesquite tree has very wide and deep roots that go far underground to distant water sources, but this has yet to be proven.

.

The locals have their own explanations – when it comes to the mystery of the Tree of Life, their theory has little to do with science. Bahrain’s ancient legends about the Tree of Life say that it shows the location of the Garden of Eden. And some Bedouin tribal beliefs deify the Tree of Life with an incarnation of the Sumerian god Enki, patron of water and life. Bedouins often come to the Tree to “talk” to it, as they believe it offers hope.

Tourists

The Tree of Life is one of the most famous landmarks in Bahrain. It grows in the heart of the desert, so before you go to it, you should carefully check the serviceability of your vehicle and stock up on plenty of water. Drive carefully, often due to sloppy driving, cars with tourists get stuck in the sands.
