Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak

The Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak is located in a small park and attracts archaeologists and tourists. Kazanlak is the only Thracian city that has been fully excavated, researched and preserved. Research shows that this hilly area was inhabited by a large settlement of Thracians, who reached their cultural development before the 3rd century. The use of brickwork was unique to this area, nowhere else in Thracian times were bricks so widely used in construction.

General Information

The Kazanlak Tomb was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983. The original tomb is closed, but an exact replica has been built next to it, which is available for everyone to see. The tomb dates from the 4th to 3rd centuries BC and was the last refuge of an unknown Thracian ruler. The world fame of the Kazanlak tomb is due to the unique frescoes in the corridor and bathing room – these are some of the best preserved works of ancient painting from the early Hellenistic era.

The original tomb can also be visited, but only for a few minutes and under certain conditions. Access to the replica tomb is possible all year round.
