Cathedral in the name of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Rostov-on-Don is a reduced copy of Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior. It is a real decoration of the city, built according to the project of architect K. A. Ton in the Russian-Byzantine style. The church of the same name already existed on this place in Rostov-on-Don, but the church laid in 1781 was burned down by a lightning strike. Then another wooden temple was built, but by 1854 it became dilapidated, so it was decided to erect a stone 5-dome cathedral. The works lasted till 1860. In 1887 a 4-tier belfry was added on the western side, which was destroyed in the middle of the 20th century and then restored in 1999. The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the plan has the shape of a cross.
