Highlights

The capital and main port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is located in the southeastern part of the island in a beautiful bay. Its February carnival is the most lavish in Spain. At 8 km to the northeast stretches Ppaya de pas Teresitas, a lovely strip of golden sand with the fishing harbor of San André, famous for its fish cuisine. History buffs can head deep into Tenerife, to the former capital La Laguna – now a university town with several museums and beautiful mansions of the XVI-XVII centuries.

Pleasing to the eye is the oldest resort of Puerto de la Cruz Here on the rocks of dark lava like mushrooms have grown multi-storey buildings, and the lack of beaches compensate for the lack of pools in the rocks at each hotel. Even more attractive are the large salt ponds of Lago Martianez, praised by Llanzarote artist César Manrique. The city’s botanical garden, Hardin de Aclimatacion de Orotava, has an abundance of subtropical plants. Parque Loro has the world’s largest parrot nursery and dolphinarium.

.

Of interest around La Cruz is Valle de la Orotava, a stunning cliff near Teide that slopes down to the water. If you take the dizzying drive (27 km) to the Mirador de Humboldt Lookout (named after the natural scientist Alexander Humboldt), you’ll get a magnificent view of banana groves. The nearby town of La Orotava is famous for the beauty of its traditional wooden houses with intricate lattice balconies and shady patios, and the baroque church of La Concepción. Casa de Los Balcones is two 17th-century mansions built of local pine wood that now house the Artesania Iberoamericana Craft Museum.
