Temple of Truth in Pattaya

(Sanctuary of Truth, Wang Boran, Prasat Mai) – a picturesque temple complex, erected of precious wood, located on Cape Richwat in the northern part of the coast of the city. The structure is built entirely of iron and teak wood, and all elements of the structure are held together without a single nail. The building is 105 meters high and 100 meters wide. The Temple of Truth is the world’s tallest wooden structure.

History

When immersed in the special atmosphere of the temple complex, filled with the aromas of heated wood and incense, most visitors have the impression that the structure is ancient. In reality, construction began in 1981 by local businessman Lek Viriyapana. The work is still unfinished, and there is reason to believe that it will never be, as the unvarnished wood deteriorates and is in constant need of restoration.

The long construction period gave rise to rumors that the life of the founder of the Temple of Truth would be cut short when the building was completed. However, the millionaire died in 2000 and his work was continued by his son. Locals believe that he is in no hurry to finish the work for the same reasons as his father. The ensemble is scheduled to be fully completed by 2025, but that doesn’t stop people from visiting the attraction now.

Under the roof of the Temple of Truth there is a place for several halls dedicated to the national trends of Buddhism of such countries as India, China, Thailand, Cambodia. They are made in a unified style using ancient Thai carving techniques.

Order of visit

Upon entering the Temple of Truth, visitors purchase tickets for the program of their choice. Also at the ticket office you can take a thematic brochure and get information in Russian. From the gate to the structure, tourists are taken by a kibitka. It is included in the price of any ticket, do not confuse this carriage with a paid one. Then you should go down the wooden stairs to the place where you will be checked your entrance document and given a helmet. This is mandatory as there is construction work going on at the site. It is forbidden to remove the protective headgear during the tour.

How to get there

The most convenient way to get to the complex from the city center. To do this, take a blue tuk-tuk coming from the Central Street towards the fish market. Get off near the fountain with dolphins, and then walk to Soi, 12, after which it will be 10-15 minutes straight to the gates of the Temple. Alternatively, you can take another tuk-tuk from the fountain. The journey by public transportation to the Temple of Truth will cost no more than 10 baht. You can also order a cab from your hotel or from any part of the city, the driver will just need to show the place on the tourist map.
