Temple of Goddess Kumari (Kumari Ghar)

Temple of Goddess Kumari is a three-storied temple palace of Kumari Ghar, which houses a real live goddess. True, she is still very young, but that doesn’t stop her from being a goddess.

.

Highlights

You can get into the goddess’ courtyard, but you can’t take pictures of her. You can take pictures only once a year when the Indra Jatra festival comes around. On this day, the goddess is taken through the streets in a decorated chariot.

.

In the goddess Kumari are elected little girls from three to five years old, who must necessarily belong to the caste of Nevari Shakaya, have no bodily injuries, be healthy, have dark eyes and hair, as well as even white teeth. The applicants also undergo another test: they must sit in a dark room with monsters that seem absolutely alive and real, and not be frightened. As soon as the girl becomes of age, another girl is sought to take the place of the goddess.

The residence of the living goddess is decorated with wooden carved shutters and balconies. The temple building was built by Jaya Prakash Malla, the last king of the Malla dynasty in Kathmandu.
