Tanah Lot Temple

Tanah Lot is an unusual temple in Bali, standing on a tiny rocky island. Tourist buses usually flock here towards evening so that everyone can get a similar shot. To get here, you have to drive 10 km along a narrow road from Kediri to the coast and join the long transportation procession. You might like the idea of arriving at the temple at dawn, at least this way you avoid the company of traders: they gather here later. According to legend, Tanah Lot was founded in the 16th century by the Javanese priest Nirartha, who dedicated it to a sea deity. The Tanah Lot temple looks very picturesque, especially after the Japanese-designed works that hid the concrete breakwaters. True, nothing has been done to hide the flow of commerce: souvenir stalls and food stalls are clustered ever tighter by the shore, which has been transformed into a huge modern resort complex.
