Taal Volcano

Taal Volcano is one of the smallest (only 260 meters high) but also the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, located on a volcanic island in Lake Taal. There is another lake in the crater of the volcano.

General information

Since 1572, the Taal volcano has erupted more than 30 times, The worst eruption occurred on January 30, 1911. The eruption came not only from the summit crater, but also from craters on the slopes of the mountain. A layer of mud up to 80 meters thick, accompanied by a stream of poisonous volcanic gases, destroyed people and houses at a distance of 10 km. More than 1300 people died, After 1965 the volcano erupted several more times, so it is under constant observation of volcanologists. Despite the danger, many tourists visit the volcanic island on Lake Taal (you can hire a boat there and back for 1500-2000 pesos). Depending on the direction and strength of the wind, a one-way trip will take 40-60 minutes. To get to the small crater many people prefer to walk, although it is probably easier and more interesting on horseback (additional from 400 pesos).
