Susan Khoi Clam Fossil Beach

Susan Khoi Clam Graveyard is a stretch of coastline that is an archaic deposit of fossilized clams and is located near the Thai city of Krabi. The limestone layer extends for 200 meters and is about 50 meters wide. The layer of compacted dead shells is up to 40 centimeters thick.

General information

Externally, the fossil shellfish beds resemble split building slabs. They were formed more than 40 million years ago, when shells of rounded shape and a diameter of about 2 centimeters, dying off, lined the bottom of an ancient body of water. Nowadays, the Susan Khoi clam graveyard has become a popular tourist attraction. It is located within the Moo Koh Phi Phi Phi National Park – Hat Nopparat Tara. Mangrove forest thickets adjoin the natural attraction and a colorful Chinese temple is nearby.

Fossil Clam Beach is open from 9.00 to 17.00. There is an entrance fee of 200 baht for adults and 100 baht for children.

How to get there

Susan Khoi Clam Cemetery stretches along the beach, near the village of Laem Pho, 17 km from the center of Krabi city and 7 km from the popular resort of Ao Nang. There is no public transportation here, so tourists get to the natural attraction by rented motorcycles or cabs. A long stone staircase leads from the road to the clam cemetery.
