Spasskoye-Lutovinovo Estate
Spasskoye-Lutovinovo is the estate of I. S. Turgenev’s mother, located in the Mtsensk District of Orel Oblast and today a state memorial museum-reserve. The village was named “Spassky” because of the Church of Transfiguration located here, and the word “Lutovinovo” was added after the name of the district judge Ivan Ivanovich, to whom Ivan the Terrible granted the estate at the end of the XVI century. In Spasskoye Lutovinovo everything has been preserved practically in the same form as it was in the time of I.S. Turgenev – the masters’ house, a park with ancient linden trees, oak trees planted by the writer, ponds with bridges and boats, a church, stables, cellars. Near the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior you can see the cemetery with the family crypt of the Turgenevs.
