General Information

Today, Somapuri Vihara is one of the most impressive archaeological sites. The complex covers more than 11 hectares of area. Although it is in a dilapidated state, one can easily visualize the layout of the temple complex, which includes a huge quadrangle flanked by monks’ cells, with an inner courtyard inside.

In the center of the courtyard is a giant stupa 20 meters high, which rises noticeably above the other buildings. The walls of the monastery are decorated with terracotta bas-reliefs, and all the household items of the Buddhist monks are now in a museum located near the complex.
