Somapuri Vihara Monastery
Somapuri Vihara is one of the largest and most impressive structures not only in Bangladesh, but in all of South Asia. Built in the 8th century it was once the largest Buddhist monastery south of the Himalayas.
.General Information
Today, Somapuri Vihara is one of the most impressive archaeological sites. The complex covers more than 11 hectares of area. Although it is in a dilapidated state, one can easily visualize the layout of the temple complex, which includes a huge quadrangle flanked by monks’ cells, with an inner courtyard inside.
In the center of the courtyard is a giant stupa 20 meters high, which rises noticeably above the other buildings. The walls of the monastery are decorated with terracotta bas-reliefs, and all the household items of the Buddhist monks are now in a museum located near the complex.
