Smolensk Cathedral of Belgorod

Smolensk Cathedral of Belgorod was built in 1703. According to legend, the erection of the Orthodox church began in honor of the sign received from the icon of the Smolensk Blessed Virgin Mary. At night from October 1 to October 2, a sentry Mefodiy Ivanov saw a bright light shining from the image of the Most Holy Mother of God of Smolensk, which was on the city gates, from which a wax candle was lit. After this sign, a wooden chapel was founded here. Smolensk Cathedral made of stone in the Moscow Baroque style was created only in 1727. The temple has a massive, vertically elongated 2-storey main volume, which has an elongated form from south to north, adjoined by a 1-part oval 2-storey apse. A small refectory and bell tower are located to the west.
