Singapore Flyer

The Singapore Flyer is the second tallest Ferris wheel in the world after the recently opened High Roller in Las Vegas. It reaches the height of a 55-story building with a total height of 165 m, 5 m taller than the Nanchang Star and 30 m taller than the London Eye Ferris wheel. Was the world’s tallest Ferris wheel until March 2014, when the Las Vegas ride became operational, surpassing the Singapore wheel in height by 2 meters.

Highlights

The Ferris wheel is located at the southeastern tip of the reclaimed land of the Maritime Center. The wheel is 150 m in diameter; the wheel is built into a three-story terminal building that houses stores, bars and restaurants; and offers extensive views of the city center and surrounding areas up to about 45 km in diameter, including the Indonesian islands of Batam and Bintan, as well as Johor, Malaysia.

The last capsule was placed on the wheel on October 2, 2007. The wheel began spinning on February 11, 2008 and was officially opened to the public as of March 1, 2008. Tickets for the attraction sold for S$8,8888 (US$6271 at the then exchange rate) for the first 3 nights after opening, a number considered auspicious in Chinese culture.

Each of the 28 air-conditioned capsules can accommodate 28 passengers. A full revolution of the wheel takes 28 minutes. Originally, the wheel rotated in a counterclockwise direction when viewed from the Maritime Center, but its direction of rotation was changed on August 4, 2008 on the advice of feng shui experts.

Useful information

A ride on the Singapore Ferris Wheel costs SGD 33 for adults and SGD 21 for children. Each ticket price also includes a visit to the Journey of Dreams Gallery, where viewers can explore Singapore’s history and landmark in seven multimedia rooms. Special VIP tickets to exclusive booths with tables are also on sale for more than SGD 300. This amount includes a one-hour ride (two revolutions of the wheel), queue-free entry to the attraction, a delicious four-course dinner, and a Singapore Sling cocktail. These booths are often rented for celebrations, romantic dinners, and even weddings.

The Ferris wheel is open from 08.30 to 22.30, the attraction’s ticket office is open until 10pm and it’s best to buy tickets in advance as there are often queues. You can also order them by phone or through the official website of Singapore Flyer. The best time to visit the wheel is in the evening, when dusk is falling over the city and illumination is lit everywhere – the views of evening Singapore are unforgettably beautiful. There is a souvenir store at the entrance to the wheel.

The Singapore Ferris Wheel is located at Singapore Flyer Pte Ltd, 30 Raffles Avenue, a 5-minute walk from Promenade MTR station (Yellow Circle Line). You can also get there by regular or water cab from the piers located at Merlion Park (Marina Bay), Boat Quay and Clarke Quay.
