General information

The Osta Brama is one of the city’s finest Renaissance architecture. It was the eastern entrance to the city. Over the centuries, the city has expanded so much that the Ostrya Brama is now almost in the center. In 1671, Carmelites from the neighboring monastery of St. Therese built a chapel over the gate for an icon of the Virgin Mary. This is the most famous image of the Virgin Mary in Lithuanian art. The icon is believed to have healing powers.

This is one of the five famous Lithuanian icons of Our Lady, where the Virgin Mary is depicted without the infant Jesus. The Madonna of Ostrobram is considered a symbol of harmony, the patron saint of Lithuania. She is honored by both Catholics and Orthodox Christians – Lithuanians, Poles, Russians and Belarusians. The chapel is located in the upper part of the Ostraya Brama gate. The image of the Virgin Mary can be seen approaching the gate from the north and climbing the hill. The interior of the chapel was decorated in the neoclassical style in 1829 and is worthy of your attention.
