San Blas Archipelago

San Blas is an archipelago consisting of 378 islands, only 20 of which are inhabited. They are inhabited by the Kuna Yala Indians. The tribe has preserved the original culture of their ancestors: women, necessarily with a gold ring in the nose, decorate their wrists and ankles with colorful wide bracelets made of beads, sew “molas” – bright national dresses with applications, sometimes a work of art. Men make small wooden figures, which are endowed with magical powers and to which Indians turn in different cases of life.

General information

The islands of the San Blas Archipelago stretch along the Caribbean coast of Panama from the Gulf of San Blas to the Colombian border. For centuries the islands have been inhabited by the Kuna Indian tribes, so these 378 islands are set aside as an autonomous region with minimal interference from the national government. The Indians maintain their own economic system, language, customs and culture, you can see the characteristic Indian clothing and hear ancient legends, music or dances. The economy of the islands is based on coconut growing, fishing and tourism. The most interesting islands are Achutupu, Kagantupu, and Coco Blanco.
