History

Salban Vihara is one of the most important archaeological sites in Bangladesh. In the late 8th century, the first Buddhist monastery was built here. The construction was initiated by Bhava Deva, the fourth ruler of the early Deva dynasty, who took an entire hill covering 168 square meters of land as a base. Construction involved the creation of a complex of buildings consisting of a central cruciform temple, several pagodas, and several buildings for training novices.

.

The entrance is marked on the north side by several stupas and chapels that led to the main gate. There is almost nothing left of the central temple. Over several millennia it has almost completely grown into the ground. the first and second floors are completely buried in the bowels of the hill, the third and fourth floors can still be guessed.

Tourists

Not far from the monastery is a museum with many interesting finds. Among them are bronze caskets, statues, terracotta plaques, jewelry, coins, relief cult stupas with Buddhist inscriptions and many other things found as a result of archaeological excavations. Every year, thousands of tourists come to the Salban Vihara Monastery eager to enjoy the grandeur of this unique place.
